In “1984,” Orwell imagined a nightmare scenario of a dystopia called Oceania, where the government defines its own reality and where propaganda invades the lives of people too distracted by rubbishy (now we call fake news) tabloids to care much about politics or history. In this modern world, Twitter is the Ministry of Truth, the great platform where facts become twisted by the nanosecond. Where the past is described in Disney terms and where the Party rallies the troops to “make Oceania great again”. Maybe the only difference in the grim living conditions and shortages of decent food and clothing is that of “the olds and the uneducated” – those left behind by, or unable to keep up with the virus of technology.
